Nokstella, the Eternal City, stands as one of the most visually striking and lore-rich underground regions within Elden Ring. Reaching this hidden civilization requires players to navigate a series of intricate quest steps and locate specialized teleportation gateways. This guide provides a straightforward breakdown to help you unlock the path to this magnificent subterranean zone efficiently.

Initiating Ranni the Witch Questline

The primary and most reliable path to Nokstella is directly tied to the personal questline of Ranni the Witch. Players must first progress through Caria Manor in northern Liurnia and pledge their service to Ranni at her tower. This opens up subsequent objectives that lead deep into the underground networks of the Lands Between.

As you advance her story, you will eventually need to retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade from the Sacred Ground of Night in Nokron. Handing this relic over to Ranni shifts the state of her towers and progresses the narrative forward. This milestone is essential before the gateway to the upper Ainsel River network becomes accessible.

Unlocking the Gateway at Renna's Rise

After delivering the blade, players should make their way to Renna's Rise, the northernmost tower among the Three Sisters. The seal blocking the entrance will now be gone, allowing you to climb to the top of the structure. At the peak, you will discover a stone waygate ready for activation.

Stepping through this portal instantly teleports your character to the Ainsel River Main region, an otherwise unreachable section of the map. Near your landing point, make sure to pick up the Miniature Ranni doll resting inside a stone coffin. Resting at the nearby Site of Grace allows you to interact with the doll to unlock the next phase of the journey.

Navigating the Upper Ainsel River Main

Once you have spoken to the doll, follow the path southward through the cavern system while avoiding or defeating the local clayman enemies. You will eventually pass a large, hanging Malformed Star creature that fires gravity magic down the corridor. Moving carefully through these ruins leads you directly to the entrance of the Eternal City.

Following the water stream down the cliffside reveals the grand architecture of Nokstella opening up before you. A Site of Grace sits immediately at the entrance, offering a safe checkpoint before you begin exploring the massive staircases and collecting valuable upgrade materials. From this hub, you can easily gather rare Ghost Gloveworts to strengthen your favorite spirit ashes.
